As a lifelong yo-yo dieter,
Steve had been struggling with weight issues ever since he was a young boy. As
he grew older he suffered through crash diets, losing a great deal of weight only
to gain it back once he quit dieting. Steve oscillated between complacency and
frustration with his large size.
However, sometimes all it
takes is a little jumpstart to get you moving. At the young age of 56, Steve decided
that his previous diets had not worked for him and he needed something else. “I
wanted a new lifestyle. I figured I was pretty unhealthy and that it was time
to get fit so I could live to be 105. I thought, now is the time. At my age, I
need to get serious about my health.”
After making the conscious
decision to make some changes and lose the extra weight, Steve surfed the net
looking for weight loss information and came across CaloriesCount.com. “I
checked out a few other sites as well, but really liked the calculators and the
philosophy behind this site.”
And get serious he did! After being on the program for 18 months, Steve has lost 100 pounds, dropping
from 305 to 205. His blood pressure has improved, and he now has a greater
energy level, which allows him to get more involved with his amateur photography
and other activities. His cholesterol level is healthy and his blood sugar levels
are normal, which is important as diabetes runs in his family. Through his weight
loss, Steve became more flexible as well. He is now able to move around better,
and feels light on his feet – a small improvement, but a HUGE success!
When Steve began using CaloriesCount.com,
he told everyone he knew that he was making healthier changes. “I knew the
public accountability from my friends and family would force me to keep going.
Many people didn’t believe I was serious about losing weight this time.”
But as he started losing weight, people noticed and this encouraged Steve to continue.
In fact, some people were so impressed with his efforts they followed in his footsteps
and began seeking a healthy lifestyle themselves. Steve was not only winning the
weight loss battle, but helping others do so as well!
Although Steve loved high-calorie, high-fat comfort foods, his journey with CaloriesCount.com
led him to completely give up such foods. Steve regularly used the online calculators
and healthy recipes on the site. He frequently read the message boards for inspiration
as well. “I found it helpful because I was surrounded by people going through
the same things, people with similar experiences. This made me feel comfortable
in my surroundings.”
Steve also became more active.
Starting slowly at first, he tracked his steps with a pedometer and eventually
worked up to 10,000 steps a day. “I used it as motivation. If it was nearing
the end of the day and I hadn’t reached my goal, I would walk more.”
Steve found enjoyment in incorporating more activity into his life. Activities
such as renovations and handy-man work, walking, biking and going on photo shoots
as an amateur photographer got Steve moving and helped him burn calories in a
fun way. And how is this for determination? Steve decided to purchase a treadmill
to continue his exercise through the cold season. “I wasn’t going
to let Ottawa winters keep me from my goal.”
That’s not to say that Steve’s weight loss journey has been easy.
As many do, he experienced a few psychological roadblocks along the way. He would
begin to lose hope because he knew he had such a long way to go. “Changing
my lifestyle was hard to do. But you just decide to do it – and you do it.”
Now that Steve has lost
the weight, he labels himself a much more optimistic person. Determination has
also become a big part of his life, because he knows that if he puts his mind
to a goal he can achieve great results. He finally feels comfortable with himself,
and no longer avoids activities because he is self-conscious of his looks or abilities,
thanks to CaloriesCount.com.
“This program works
because it’s not trendy and is common sense. The focus is on counting calories
and exercise, not gimmicks. I knew I could live with this type of approach
to weight loss – the program felt comfortable to me because it was so down-to-earth.
The site promotes conscious, serious lifestyle choices, and that’s what’s
important.”
Steve would like to lose
another 25-30 pounds and knows it is within his grasp. By following this plan,
he is constantly motivated. He advises his fellow CaloriesCount.com members to
go slow and set long- and short-term goals. “Be realistic with your goals,
but be determined to reach them. And don’t be discouraged if you don’t
meet them right away.”
We applaud you for your
determination, Steve. Your dedication has resulted in great success and good health
that is well deserved!
